The Duodenal Switch procedure uses both a restrictive and malabsorptive approach to weight loss surgery. The restrictive portion of the surgery involves the surgeon removing part of the stomach and the remaining pouch or sleeve is attached to the final section of the small intestine. Because this puts even greater limits on the body's absorption of calories and nutrients, weight loss inevitably occurs.
The Duodenal Switch procedure has additional risks associated due to the complexity of the surgery, and is normally used only on patients who are considered "super heavy" or those who have a BMI greater than 50.
