Do You Need Weight Loss Surgery?
If you are at least 50 pounds over your ideal weight, and diet and exercise have failed, you may be a candidate. The Body Mass Index is the standard used by the FDA to determine who may be a candidate for Lap-Band surgery.
Medicare uses the Body Mass Index to provide a standard as well for those who seek Medicare reimbursement. Individuals whose Body Mass Index (BMI) is 35 or greater with one or more weight related illnesses, or a BMI greater than 40 are typically covered; however, individuals financing the surgery themselves are not restricted by BMI, especially if they have other weight related diseases such as Type-2 diabetes.

Gastric Bypass Surgery is a restrictive procedure in which 75% of the stomach is removed, with a small pouch created at the top of the stomach and rerouting the intestine to the bottom of the pouch. The pouch holds approximately one ounce of food, and thereby creates the sensation of feeling full with less food. Click here for more information on Gastric Bypass Surgery.
Gastric Banding, commonly referred to as the Lap Band™ procedure, is an inflatable device placed around the top portion of the stomach, and is intended to slow consumption of food. It can be adjusted over time to meet the individual weight loss needs of the patient, and is extremely popular because of positive weight loss outcomes, less surgical risk, and that it is reversible. Click here for more information on Gastric Banding Surgery.
Sleeve Gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure like Gastric Bypass, but the intestine is not re-routed. Sleeve Gastrectomy has become increasing popular due to positive outcomes with Excess Weight Loss and Type 2 Diabetes remission. Patients who have undergone Sleeve Gastrectomy realize nearly 100% Excess Weight Loss and a return to a BMI of 25. It is also considered to be superior for long-term weight loss maintenance due to the restrictive nature of the surgery as well as better nutrition absorption because the intestine is not re-routed. Click here for more information on Gastric Sleeve Gastrectomy.
The Duodenal Switch Procedure is a restrictive and mal-absorption surgery, in which patients see exceptional Excess Weight Loss results, and is considered a "cure" for Type 2 Diabetes with 98% remission. Typically, super-obese patients, who have a BMI over 45 would be candidates for the Duodenal switch. Click here for more information on the Duodenal Switch Procedure.
Revision weight loss surgery can correct a variety of complications that can follow an initial weight loss surgical procedure. Revision surgery can also benefit patients who are dissatisfied with the amount of weight they are losing, be it too much or not enough. Click here for more information on Revision Bariatric Surgery.
