Deep Vein Thrombosis is when a blood clot develops in a deep vein, typically in the lower leg to upper thigh area of the body. Blood clots develop when blood thickens and begins to clump together. It is important to recognize Deep Vein Thrombosis early due to the risk of a blood clot breaking free and traveling through the bloodstream. A blood clot that breaks free is called an Embolus, and can travel to an artery in the lungs and potentially block the bloodflow, which can be fatal. When an Embolus travels to an artery in the lungs, it is called a Pulmonary Embolism (PE). Normally Pulmonary Embolisms occur from blood clots in the upper thigh area.
